In talking to mamas who are expecting I’ve learned that one of their biggest concerns is how to incorporate their older children into the newborn session. Those precious sibling portraits are at the very top of their priority list but they’re concerned that their kiddos won’t cooperate. Luckily, I have been doing this for quite some time now and have just the tips and tricks to get timeless photos of your little ones together! I want you to feel comfortable, confident, and ready to enjoy the process of any session with your newborn and their siblings.

      FIRST AND FOREMOST, DON’T STRESS

Of course, this is so much easier than done. Toddlers are essentially baby teenagers with even less control over their emotions and sometimes older kids just don’t want to be a part of the session. Let go of your worries and put your trust in me. I’ve got years of experience working with children and creating the beautiful sibling images you see here. I am here to document the love you feel for your family.

GET THEM EXCITED AHEAD OF TIME

A few weeks before our session, start talking it up so they can understand how important and special this event is. Big tip, plan some activities before and after the session. Go to a children’s museum, plan a picnic, take them to their favorite park, anything! Just make sure they are aware that this is a special and fun family activity, and one of many on a special day. And if you need some ideas for local places to visit, just ask me.

      ARRIVE SEPARATELY

I always recommend that little ones are brought to the session a little later. The studio is a warm & quiet, calming environment and once baby is sleeping soundly we start with mama & baby portraits as well as baby’s individual photos. Then once the kiddos arrive we’ll start on siblings and family portraits. Not having them there for the entire session ensures that they won’t become overtired, antsy or frustrated and creates a more relaxing environment for all.

      BRING REINFORCEMENTS

Sometimes, we all need a little motivation. I recommend bringing some little sweet treats to the session in your bag to have on hand, just in case. Mini marshmallows or rockets are wonderful options since they won’t ruin any outfits. Encourage them throughout the session for whatever you have planned afterward, as well.

      BREATHE, AND HAVE FUN

Children are excellent at picking up on your mood. I know it’s often one of your first outings after having baby and you’re hoping for wonderful results. My best advice is to be present with your children during our session, and try your best to go with the flow.. Smile, laugh, hug them, be in the moment. It’s beautiful, it’s loud, it’s chaotic– those are the authentic moments that I capture and turn them into everlasting, beautiful memories. You’re going to love the results, and love that you embraced whatever chaos was behind those stunning images.
